Movie Summary

Auggie Pullman is a young boy born with a facial difference that makes him look very different from other children. Because of numerous surgeries and health issues, he has been homeschooled by his loving mom, Isabel. As Auggie turns ten, his parents decide it’s time for him to attend a mainstream school for the first time. Auggie is nervous but determined to make friends and live a normal life despite the challenges he knows he will face.

At Beecher Prep, Auggie encounters a mix of reactions. Some kids stare or make hurtful comments, while others try to be kind and understand him. Julian, one of the popular students, is particularly mean, making Auggie’s school days tough. However, Auggie finds support in a few friends, such as Summer, who sits with him at lunch, and Jack Will, who befriends him but later struggles with peer pressure. Auggie’s older sister, Via, also deals with her own feelings of being overlooked because much of her family’s attention is focused on Auggie’s needs.

Throughout the school year, Auggie faces bullying and isolation but shows incredible courage and kindness. His teachers and principal recognize his bravery and help create a more welcoming environment. Auggie’s classmates gradually begin to see beyond his appearance and appreciate his intelligence, humor, and strength. He participates in school events, including a memorable field trip where he proves his bravery and earns respect from many of his peers.

The story also explores the perspectives of people around Auggie. Via struggles with her own identity and friendships while feeling protective of her brother. Jack Will learns important lessons about loyalty and honesty after making mistakes. Even Julian’s parents are shown to have their own biases, highlighting the complexities of acceptance and understanding.

As the school year comes to an end, Auggie is nominated for a prestigious award recognizing his outstanding character. Receiving this honor in front of the entire school is a powerful moment that symbolizes how far he has come and how much he has inspired others. The film ends on a hopeful note, showing that kindness, empathy, and courage can break down barriers and bring people together.

“Wonder” is a heartwarming and uplifting story about acceptance, friendship, and the importance of seeing people for who they truly are, not just how they look. It encourages viewers to be compassionate and to stand up against bullying, reminding us all that everyone deserves to be treated with kindness and respect.

Controversies

The movie "Wonder" (2017), based on R.J. Palacio's novel, largely received positive reviews and faced minimal controversy. However, some critics debated its portrayal of facial differences, arguing it simplified the experiences of individuals with craniofacial conditions. There were discussions about whether the film leaned toward inspirational tropes rather than authentically representing the complexities faced by those with facial deformities. The film did not encounter significant censorship issues but sparked conversations about the responsibility of Hollywood in portraying disabilities sensitively. Overall, "Wonder" was praised for promoting kindness and empathy, despite some criticism regarding depth and representation accuracy.
